Carpenter Threatening Lawsuit

I have reached stalemate with carpenter referred through national home product chain on staircase replacement issues. Cannot agree on solution to unsatisfactory work done. Stair risers and treads do not meet my local codes nor International Building Code. I filed complaint with home chain who suspended him from their referral program as part of their protocol until this is resolved. I cited poor workmanship, sub code stairs, poor communication, and offensive personal attack during resolution discussion in my home. I also submitted photos of problem areas. He claims to be out of work and threatens slander and defamation suit. Do you think he has a strong case against me? Thank you.

Was the work inspected and red tagged for not being up to code?

If the answer to those questions is no, then he might actually have a case against you.
