can a landlord end a lease early????

a good friend of mine was told at the beginning of march that he had to be out of his apartment by the end of the month. he only signed a lease 3 months ago and still has 3 months to go. this was apparently due to the owner declaring bankruptcy. can the landlord do this as he is breaking the lease? or would it be up to the courts/mortgage lender?
