My jurisdiction is: South Carolina

I am an independent contractor with a securities firm. My contract states that the broker/dealer can terminate the contract at any time (immediately) for any reason by giving written notice and that if I want to terminate it, I have to give the broker/dealer 30 days notice. Is this clause valid, and if so, why have a contract if it can be terminated at any time? The contract is a North Carolina contract.

The clause is likely valid. You and the securities firm were free to agree to pretty much whatever you wanted, and you agreed to it.

The contract is there to govern your relationship so long as you both agree to continue it.
