Calling in sick when out of PTO

If someone uses up their PTO for the year (which includes sick days) and then later on in the year, needs to call in sick. Does the employer normally give the employee an unpaid day off? Is it up to the employer? The person is not qualified for FMLA because this person hasn't been employed for a full year yet.

There is no way we can guess what some random employer in Wisconsin will do. Yes, it's up the employer.

It is entirely up to the employer. Unless protected under a state, Federal, or municipal law, time off (paid or unpaid) is not a legal issue but a matter between employer and employee

FLSA allows employers to deduct pay even from salaried/exempt employees for sick reasons as long as they have a bonafide sick plan (generally defined as PTO of at least 6 days) Whether the employer does so is up to their own policies. The employer can also discipline for absenteeism for doing so unless the absences are protected by federal, state or local laws.
