I have written an intent to sell my van to a person with written words like: I agree to sell the person my van to this person and I am holding this car until X/X (some date) with a deposit of personal check of $XXX for total price of $XXXX.
However, I got better offer later and wonder whether I could break the contract and what is the best thing to do. I've also sent an email with words that I will turn down other offers. What's my legal responsibilities? Could I change my mind and break the contract and sold it for a better price?
Thank you very much for your advice!

If you break the contract (a) you'll need to return the deposit, and (b) you might be liable for damages, which is likely a small claims case. Best case? Call up the guy, tell him you got a better offer, and offer him back his deposit with a little extra to let him know you're sincere. Perhaps that might work and everyone will be happy?
