Consumer Law, Warranties Bally's Membership Cancellation

Recently my girfriend signed up for a membership at Bally's. Due to finacial situations she is but between paying her membership or paying for her school fees. The choice seemed pretty obvious, after sending in a letter of cancellation and making several phone calls that went no where. Bally's simply gives her the runaround. What if anything can be done to cancel her membership?

If sh is under contract, she can't. Bally's is the worst gym to join because of their long contracts. Financial difficulties unfortunately is not a reason to cancel. There are lots of complaints on this forum and internet regarding them. I would NEVER join a gym that is not a month to month contract. She needs to read the term of her contract closely.
