On a calm day I parked my vehicle next to a friends vehicle in a parking lot. As I was opening the drivers door of my vehicle a gust of wind (whirlwind) jerked the door from my hand and struck the right passenger door of my friends vehicle causing damage. Am I liable?

yes. besides its not worth losing a friend TRYING to not pay for the damages.

I have paid for the damages. Both my friend and I are comfortable with our friendship. I will expand on my question. Am I liable and if so, why?

You are responsible for the damage to his car, but if you have already paid for it (or are in the process of paying for it) then you have taken care of that. So unless there is some other damage or someone was hurt, then no, it's a done deal. If you are asking about legal issues such as a traffic citation, no, it was not a moving violation, and in fact not even a violation of the law really.
