My jurisdiction is: new york

i have search the forum but none of which have really answer my question.

i helped my friend sign for a vehicle in which i am currently the primary and he's the co-signer. recently he has not paid for the loan for 80 days and is destroying my credit. i understand now why i shouldn't have help him but now that's besides the point. i have been contacting the bank back and forth to find out what i can do in this manor(cause he would not pick up there calls) and was told that there was a way to take my name off the loan. i need some advice at this point. they said that since he currently the registered owner and insurer for the whole course of the ownership that there is a way to get my name off and they seen it happen before. is this true? my other course of action that i just looked up was to sue him for the amount. is that possible?

thanks in advance

the loan has to be refinanced in order for your name to be removed- you cant sue him unless you have already paid the loan off-- you need to go get the car and either pay for it or sale it
