Attorney's fees and investigation responsibility

A law firm is threatening to sue me for a 2 year old hit and run involving a car that was previously registered to me. The car was towed and sold by the tow company several months prior to the hit and run. I have told this to the attorney's office and their investigator. The city has this information in their records, I called the police department and verified this. They don't seem to care and just want me to pay, saying it isn't their responsibility to investigate anything. I suspect they know all of this already and couldn't find anyone to sue so they came back to me hoping they could get me to pay.

Is it my responsibility to get all of these records for these attorneys? If they sue me and lose will they have to pay my attorney's fees? I really don't want to help them since they have been harrassing me and just want me to pay a bill I don't feel I am responsible for.

Thanks,

sinsie
