attorney fees

Here it goes. My wife was charged and arrested and has since been found not guilty of the charges brought on by a ex-friend (civil warrant no police involvement) my question is can she sue for attorney fees ($1500.) and slander ($3500.) which would go towards cost of days off from work and to get the charges expunged. It still shocks me that anyone can bring charges like this and walk right out of court with no cost to them,they should have to pay the attorney fees if they dont win their case, I'll bet some of them would think twice then.i just had to get that off my chest. so if you have any advice that you could share with me i thank you for your time.
