Are noncomptes valid if the employee is fired?

That depends entirely on the terms of the non-compete. There isn't any law that automatically voids all non-competes in the event of an involuntary termination, but likewise there isn't any law that automatically validates them in those circumstances either. You'll have to show the specific agreement to an Indiana attorney.
 
Any time a non compete is involved your best bet is to always take it to an employment or contract attorney in your area for review to see if it is enforceable.
