I was wondering about the engagement ring. When the wedding is broken off, do you legally have to give it back? I always thought that the engagement ring was a gift and it could be kept, but the wedding band was like a contract & if it was broken it had to be returned. Thank you for any help with this question.

The law surrounding an engagement ring is dealt with by state law. In fact, most states have law specifically regarding gifts made in contemplation of marriage. It would seem that such gifts are increasingly being seen as being made as conditional upon a marriage. It seems the right thing to have a law that such gifts, made solely in contemplation of marriage, should be returned. However, the actual law varies from state to state.
