My fiance and I paid the security deposit on a new apartment one week before we planned on moving in, no lease has been signed yet. An emergency came up and there is an illness in the family. Unfortunately we won't be able to keep our move in date and are leaving the state. Are we still entitled to our 400+ dollars of security deposit since there was no bounding legal contract?
We don't have a lot of money and we could really use both the free legal help and the security deposit back. I just want to know my rights and if it is worth pursuing the landlord for this money.
