I have a horrible situation with my father. My mom has sole physical custody but they have joint legal custody. My Dad is incredibly emotionally abusive. He has the courts in his back pocket somehow and they won't listen to me or the family psychologist. They just do whatever he wants. I am certain he is going to go for full custody soon. The legal age of majority in Alabama is 19. I turn 18 October 15th and I want to get out of town to protect myself. He is now stating he is going to come get me this weekend to be alone with him whether I want to or not. I have to get away from him now. I have 2 questions: 1) If I am 18 and go to another state where the age of majority is 18 am I no longer a minor - does my father have any rights to me? 2) If I go out of state can police come get me and take me back to Alabama against my will?

you may not leave to avoid visitation with your dad

untill you reach the age of majority, whatever the court order syas goes- if you leave the state, you COULD be reported as a runaway, and forced back, you are a resident of the state of alabama, and you are bounded by their laws.whatever state you run away to will send you home.
