Is there a law or legal precedence that requires me to read my mail? I received an envelope containing a legal notice in my mailbox. The letter required a signature but the mail person did not leave the card for me to go to the post office to sign for it. Instead he/she placed the envelope in my mailbox.

No, there is no statute that even requires you to know how to read.

It is not about reading the materials that might have been left for you, rather your proper receipt of same to effect proper service.

You probably weren't properly served, or without your signature, there'll be no record of such service.

However, they'll eventually effect the proper service upon your person.

All you'll be doing is delaying the inevitable.
