I received a call from my pastor back in chicago asking if my husband and I would be interested in adopting a baby from a woman in the church that we know. She is in her 30's and has had a hard life to say the least. She and her husband used to be drug addicts and several years ago gave another baby up for adoption. She now has a two year old and a three month old baby. The husband has recently lost his job and they are now living in a run down hotel room. The pastor told her that we would be willing to adopt the child and they both agreed it would be the best thing to do and since she knows me it made the decision a bit easier for them.
Ive said all of the to ask a few question...
1) My husband is from Africa (legal immigrant) and will soon become a US Citizen. Is it required that we wait until he is a citizen before we can adopt?
2) The parents know that if the answer to question 1 is no then we will have to wait to adopt, but want us to take the child now and continue the process once my husband is a citizen. Do you see any issue with doing this?
3) The urgency is that they are fearful that DCFS will get involved and really want to see the child with us before that happens. If we take the child prior to adoption can/should we have a legal document drawn up for both sets of parents to sign?
Sincerely,
J&J
