I recently moved from an apartment that I lived in for 17 years as a model tenant due to a condo conversion. I provided adequate notice of my intent to vacate at the end of my lease, despite the fact that I had already been given an eviction notice. My landlord informed me that since the apartment was due to be renovated for sale once I moved out, all that was required was a letter stating for the record that I would be moving out at the end of my lease. I provided the letter 30 days prior to my move out and left the premises as stated, with eyewitnesses from the building office.

I then received a call from my landlord's office informing me that because I had not returned the keys the day following my move, a day on which their office closed early due to the holiday, I would be charged several days rent as per my lease & NJ law. Is this legal? Doesn't an eviciton notice nullify my lease agreement, which in fact had ended? Can I fight this?
