Hypothetically, if a minor(age15-17) were to win the lottery, where would the money go? I heard it goes either into a trust fund or into the guardians bank account. If a minor won the lottery could he/she claim independence and get emancipated?

Not in your state. Not unless the minor's parents were willing to sign the petition. And not even then unless the minor was able to convince the judge that there was a valid reason why the minor NEEDED emancipation. Not just wanted it.

Minors can't legally purchase lottery tickets in Florida.
How, therefore, can a minor legally win a lottery?

FLORIDA

Lottery: Limited to players over 18.

Pari-mutuel betting: Florida has not only dog and horse tracks, but also jai-alai. State statutes prohibit wagering by a person under the age of 18 but permit admittance if the minor is accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Florida Statutes §550.0425.

Bingo: State law prevents anyone under 18 from being allowed to play any bingo game or be involved in the conduct of a bingo game in any way. Florida Statutes §849.0931.

Easy. An adult buys the ticket for the minor, collects the winnings, hands the money to the minor.

Obviously wouldn't be that simple for the big jackpot.

Nice story, except the adult would more than likely retain the entire jackpot.

The state can't pay the minor by statute.

Payment can be made to a corporation, or an adult.

With lotsa money at stake, that kid is gettin' NUTTIN, a whole lotta NUTTIN at that!!!

I've seen adults do exactly that when money is involved.

Greed motivates people to take the path of least resistance to receive their reward.
