Deportation, Re-entry 90 day prohibition on reentry to europe?

I just went to Paris on a student visa from sept to december 31st. I want to visit my boyfriend in Italy in on March 8 - 15. I am told that I can't go because my visa won't allow me to go back to europe for 90 days? Is this true? Can't I use my passport to visit my boyfriend. What does my visa have to do w/ it? Can someone answer soon, please?
