Former President Barack Obama (left) and Speaker Emerita of the House Nancy Pelosi (right) had 'privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsements,' as it became clear 81-year-old President Joe Biden was going to abandon his reelection bid in July 2024

Former President
Barack Obama was not pleased that former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris the day after President Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race.

In his new book Retribution, ABC News' Jonathan Karl provided new details on what had been widely known - that Obama didn't want a quick coronation of Harris, but rather 'a process' to determine who would become the Democratic nominee.

The Daily Mail obtained an advanced copy.

Obama called Pelosi shortly after her endorsement of Harris became public.

'The Obamas were not happy,' a Pelosi confidant told Karl. 'This person summed up Obama's message to Pelosi as, essentially, "What the f*** did you just do?"'

Pelosi told the former Democratic president: 'That train has left the station.'

The endorsement had come as a surprise to Obama because he and Pelosi had been in 'regular communication' as it appeared then 81-year-old Biden was nearing the decision to drop out of the race, and 'they agreed Harris should not simply be handed the nomination unchallenged,' Karl wrote.

'Therefore, Obama and Pelosi - arguably the two most influential figures in the Democratic Party - had privately agreed to abstain from making any endorsement.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the most shrewd politicians in Washington. She rivals or exceeds some other famous Speakers like Tip O'Neil. She is no stranger to playing hardball when its required. Given her public persona she would fit well with Teddy Roosevelt's famous statement "Speak softly and carry a big stick." After dealing with her in Washington for eight years Obama surely knows this. In his position I would've been keeping a close eye on Nancy and keep checking to see what she was up to. If you don't that, she'll run you over like freight train if she sees an advantage to it. If Obama failed to watch her closely then this is largely on him. He should have known that this might be a possibility. On the other hand, Obama's idea to test Harris before crowning her the Democratic nominee was likely the best way to go. Obama may not play hardball as strong as Pelosi but I think he has finger on the pulse of electorate, at least more than Pelosi does.

Pelosi did a good job of silencing the dissenting voices of Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (AOC) and the other young Democratic women House Members that had become known as "the Squad". She is the reason so few Democrats publicly dissent from whatever becomes the Democrat's established policy. That's great for pushing through lots of legislation, but not great for getting the best legislation.

Poor Obama, betrayed by a politician.

Anybody surprised?

I'll send him a TS card.

(Remember those, Judge?) LOL.

'deed I does!

Ahhh, I love these trips down memory lane.

There are several variations of the "TS" card seen around from years past. I've seen these spelled out as "Tuff Stuff" or "Tuff S**t" but both were a humorous way to discourage whining. Likely begun as a joke to give to Service Members who seemed to complain all the time, similar to the phrase, "tell it to the chaplain" instead of listening to the gripe. Most have a number of boxes that can be checked off or hole-punched, to indicate the number of visits to the chaplain (I'm not sure if the chaplain would no longer see that Service Member whose card got full!).

It seems that some chaplains picked up on these and used similar cards, perhaps the ones with "Tuff Stuff" instead of the alternative, then later "Theological Solutions," to encourage Service Members to come and see them and also to advertise worship services. Below is a card used by chaplains at Spokane Army Air Field (sometime between the end of WW2 and 1950) which has similar encouragement to visit the chaplain on one side (with places for hole-punches) and worship service times on the other side for Catholics, Protestants and Jewish Service Members (author's collection):

Below is another similar TS card, this using the TS to recommend "Tried Solutions for Tough Situations" with several situations paired with Scripture verses. This card also has the blocks around the outside to be hole-punched by the chaplain. On the reverse is a picture of the chaplain, Melvin E. Pratt (author's collection):

Below is a simpler "TS" card adding the common statement, "Tell your troubles to the Chaplain" by Chaplain Sidoti, who had a distinguished military career in WW2 and following in the NY National Guard. You can read more about Chaplain Sidoti here (author's collection):

As much as a loathe O'Bama. I agree with him on this point. The democratic nominee should not have been Harris. The one person who could not carry 1 Democratic elective would make a successful presidential nomination is doomed to fail. I hope they regroup cause Trump and his chaos of doom can not be over fast enough for me.

I have not read the book, just the excerpt given above.
Based on that, I don't see that Obama thought it should not be Harris, rather, he wished for it to be "a process", not simply handed over. You know...exactly as written above.

With the exception of Obama (whom I loved as President) I agree with you. I respect your willingness to address Trumps failure as president. And I am still waiting for a Dem or even a GOP that is willing to meet halfway and represent the majority of this nation.
I'm, for the most part, middle of the political road...I will vote for whomever will best serve our nation as a whole, not just my own "needs/agenda". Not just blue states or red states...but all states. WE are ALL AMERICANS. Trump has never understood that.

Oh no, he understands just does not care- while Federal Employees can't pay the rent of housing payments he is building a Ballroom and declaring himself the Best President ever up there with Washington or Jackson. He is a complete baboon and I do not know what was funnier. Him expecting them to give him a Nobel or when he found out he wasn't getting it. The whole 3rd term thing is a JOKE -- he is the world's largest trolling MEME of a President.

You forgot to include the word "successful" in that sentence.

Sure, if success looks like a shut down government. Military activities in major cities, attacking boats in South America that may or may not have drugs, an out of control inflation, tariffs and hyper inflation. Failing farmers, crumbling infrastructure, a corporate first mentality, fake job numbers which are way under reported, success to you looks very different to me.

I am okay, I got mine as I was grandfathered in, and am a Gen X'er with 10-15 years left to go. All the Boomers may have gotten their entitlements too but you can't take any of it with you when you go so the Boomers aren't long for the world.

You need to fly anywhere lately and are interested in having a ZERO paycheck traffic controller land your plane? That would be an interesting endeavor especially right now.

sure, if success looks like a shut down government.

It's the Democrats that shut down the government. They admit it.

Katherine Clark - "Of course there will be families that are going to suffer. It is one of the few leverages that we have."

Chuck Schumer - "Every day gets better for us."

Pete Aguilar - "We understand this is not easy, and this is going to be painful." referring to the end of SNAP benefits.

I hope those bastards get voted out of office by the angry Americans that they are screwing.

FAFO.

Yesterday Trump finally acknowledged that he's not eligible to run for the presidency in 2028 and that text of the amendment make that pretty clear. I suspect that part of the reason for his change in position is that he no longer wants a third term but wanted a reason not to run that was out of his control so as not to disappoint his followers. Trump is beginning to show some of the signs of early dementia, not unlike what happened to Biden in his second term. The presidency is a very demanding job and I'd bet it works against good mental health in people aged 75+.

Yes, and it by now a well worn tactic that has been practiced by both parties at different points in the past. Enacting the budget is the most basic and most essential things Congress and the President do. I'd like to see some kind of penalty imposed on those that are pushing for the government. A penalty that has some real bite to it sufficient enough to deter most members in both parties to enact at the minimum a continuing resolution to keep the government up and running normally while they have their political fight.

The problem with this line of thinking is, that illegals and such have been getting FREE healthcare for decades. An ER can not turn away patients hence why University Hospitals have been running red deficient of millions year after year. Illegals already get free healthcare, the only answer is to deport them. Which Trump has been doing but do not think that they have not been receiving FREE healthcare forever.

It isn't just about Healthcare and health insurance.

Over the last 100 years, give of take a decade or two; someone, something, some political party has created a nation of deadbeats.

These deadbeats now run their family business, ENTITLED BEGGARS!

Generation after generation once possessed PRIDE. People did whatever it took to become/remain SELF SUFFICIENT, for millions that meant doing HONEST WORK, receiving an HONEST PAYCHECK.

Over the years, certain politicians created a band of beggars. Heck, some politicians cheered as other politicians encouraged and allowed these beggars to invade our borders, our once proud citizenry was infected by these border burglars. To satiate and retain the beggars, politicians struggled to give the beggars a meager existence, along with subsistence creating corpulent "bedda gimme my sh*t to get my vote!!!!

Trouble with all this "free lunch" drivel is that SOMEONE (millions of hardworking, do right citizens are funding the inaptly named "free lunch".

What Is There Ain't No Such Thing As a Free Lunch (TANSTAAFL)?

"There ain't no such thing as a free lunch" (TANSTAAFL) is an expression that highlights the hidden and opportunity costs behind seemingly free goods or services. It reminds us that every choice, whether personal or financial, carries a cost borne by someone, often unseen. While the saying originated from the practice of saloons offering "free" lunches in the 19th century, the principle still applies today to modern deals, discounts, and investments: nothing is ever truly free.

This is the most entitled BOOMER statement I have ever seen, while I don't agree with entitlements and unearned hand outs. The disparity among the wealthy and the poor is at its greatest height in history. It has created a riff among the economically challenged to not be able to pull themselves up by bootstraps that don't exist. I was born long after the CRA of the early sixties so I don't have any advantages of privilege which you and others benefited from by being born decades earlier. Mine was a sacrifice of hard work and determination that pulled me up from a lower bottom middle income family to better times. While there is no such thing as a FREE LUNCH you are correct, there however is a big issue with those who got theirs not helping others as they can. Trust me you get a lot more out of life when you do things to benefit others than those who horde and reap the rewards of a time specific advantage which does not exist for current generations.

I don't care if you disagree with me.

I have my opinions, you have yours.

I don't judge you.

I suggest, not demand, you don't judge others.

As far as my generational affiliation, BOOMER, I consider that nonsense in the same category as "reading tea leaves", "palm reading", and "crystal ball gazing".

I suggest, if you desire to continue posting here, you return to civility.

Attacking the opinions of others won't be tolerated.

Discuss the principle, idea, concern, or issue; not the poster!

Bear in mind, most people are responsible adults, who no longer require parental guidance.

"Love thy neighbor"

Who is a neighbor? The family next door? Down the street? Around the block? Who our neighbors?
Does a city/state/country line define who our neighbors are?

We are, as human beings, neighbors and family. Some of us are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads and food in our fridge. Not all are so fortunate.
There are children going hungry. Through no fault of their own they were born to a poor household.

I can't help everyone, but I can help some.

20 lbs of meat
40 lbs of root veggies
apples, oranges and pares
caned fish
peanut butter
case of formula
diapers
warm clothing
other basic necessities

Every small help, with enough generosity, will equal a big difference.
Show your love of God and help his children.
