My sister is living with a friend and they both own the property, when my sister died of cancer, we told to make plans on her asset. Since she moved out of the house due to some reason, she told us to leave the house alone. She did not have any will, now her friend wanted all our (living sister and brothers) to sign her away. We refuse to get involved, she even retained a lawyer and send us a certified mail which I refuse to receive. Is there a way out of this without signing?

Refusing to receive a certified letter serves no purpose. If it is sent to your legal address you are assumed to have recieved any notice contained in the letter. Go sign for the letter and see what it says.

Has anyone started probate on your sister's estate? If not then one of you need to go to the probate court and start proceedings. If she owned a share of the house it now belongs to her heirs according to state law. You have the right to sign your share over to her friend if that is your wish.
