New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

Well, now this new boss is completely handcuffed and is being told (by those above him) to work with who he's got, or resign. He was told that he can only require drug tests, background checks, and physical exams for prospective incoming employees. Personally, I have no issue with doing any of...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

I suppose it would depend on how recent (or not recent) it was. Now it's sounding like the people above the new boss are telling him that the most he can do is randomly drug screen and that he will be unable to have background checks done on existing employees. I'm not sure where the physical...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

As well as background checks. If he shows his boss where Mr. Smith, who had a clean record at the time of preemployment, but has since had some scrapes with the law during his 15 years of employment, Mr. Smith could be gathering his personal belongings with the help of security. The ironic thing...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

Exactly. From what I understand, the new boss can't come in the door firing anyone, as per his bosses, not by law or anything. IF what I heard is accurate

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

I agree. I have been thinking about what @zddoodah said. Background checks and drug tests only cover things to a certain point. Here I was thinking "but I did all that, preemployment". LOL Same with a physical exam. Of course I had one way back when I was going through the hiring process. But...

@zddoodah The physical exam refers to an exam/checkup with a doctor. This too was a preemployment requirement, and it looks like it will also become something that will be done periodically along with the background check and drug screening

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

Looks like it's begun already. I go for my physical and drug test in the morning. Well, on the plus side, I will be retirement eligible in about 2 and half years

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

I was looking at it more like this guy is a department head and not a vice president or anything. Basically, he's middle management, not upper management. He is instituting a policy that everyone under him, whether a new or long term existing employee, must submit to a drug test, background...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

@zddoodah I didn't phrase it very well when I said re-background checked and re-drug tested. I was thinking along the lines of having to redo preemployment requirements. But I see now that background checking and drug screenings are ongoing. Our new boss, (who is only a department head), has...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

The new boss said he was shocked to hear that the place does not do periodic background checks and/or random drug tests. As much as it pains me to say it, he kind of has a point. One background check at the beginning of employment really isn't sufficient to last throughout someone's long term...

New boss is requiring background checks and drug tests for already existing employees

I've been with my employer for over 22 years. A new boss has just taken over. This wasn't a promotion from within or anything. This is someone completely from the outside. Everyone who is reporting to him has been informed that he requires a background check and drug test for anyone and everyone...

In the state of Pennsylvania, is it illegal for an employer to blacklist a former employee?

Absolutely. I was one of the ones convinced that my name was on the Alabama version of that urban myth of a list in 1997. I had been let go from one employer and got picked up by another company just a few days later. I had it in my head that my new employer took mercy on me and gave me a pass...

    Question about privacy at work

It is HIGHLY unlikely that the cameras are THAT good. Your employer wants you to THINK that that is the case. That being said, still, limit being on your personal phone at work.

    New boss interviewing existing employees

Didn't you see where I said that I had misread that? That's my bad. Upon further inquiry, it turns out that yes, it will cost the new boss some money if/when they decide to clean house. First of all, my retirement is still MY retirement. It doesn't belong to the new boss. I can roll that to an...
