My son moved off to college. When he went, he took the cell phone, and thereby the cell number, that my mother had bought to keep in contact with me & my family.
When he left here, everything about his service was in my mother's name.
He called me one day to tell me he was buying a different phone and adding texting, that he'd talked to grandma, but the saleman made him change some things. What he was telling me wasn't making sense, so I called my mom to see what she knew.
She told me the guy at the cell phone store had called her multiple times, telling her that she had to sign a new contract for my son to get his phone. Later he called telling her the addition of the texting meant she had to sign a new contract, and he made another call pressuring her, as well as having my son call a relay his messages.
By the time all was said and done, someone at the location forged my mother's name releasing the phone number and a contract was drawn up in my son's name. All he wanted was a new phone.
My mom found out that her number had essentially been taken away from her, made some calls, and was told all would be straightened out; my son just had to go back to the store and sign some stuff. He could return the phone if he had less than 70 minutes on it. (Which now I've found out was another lie.) Within days, everyone was left believing that all was back to normal.
However, my son got a bill for the entire month. This started off a new series of calls to customer service, the store location, etc. Once again, they were led to believe the number and charges had been put back to my mother's service and all was well.
Monday, my son received a text saying his phone would be shut off on 9-11 if payment was not made. He called my mother, went out to the store, she spent time on the phone with the store, with the customer service center, and even had to fax some documentation. It was supposed to just be "support" documentation, to verify her identity (such as her driver's license number). However, one of the papers they told her she had to sign was actually a new contract. She noted all over it that she was just verifying her original, she would NOT accept another contract, etc. and when my son left, they assured him all was straightened out, once & for all.
My mother received a call from an odd number today. It was my son, borrowing someone else's phone.... his had been shut off. Because of his class & football schedules, he could not get to the store during store hours. My mother called into customer service and they REFUSED to speak to her about it. They told her it wasn't her account any longer and they would not speak to her about the matter.
What can we do??? My son is hundreds of miles away from home, so it's not like we can just drive over and fix this in person. My mom and son have been jumping through hoops to get & keep this straightened out, and now we're afraid Alltel will put a ding on my son's unestablished credit.
