trying to help a friend

a friend of mine's son past away several weeks ago.. my friend is divorced from the mother .there is no will .. there is a 401k and life insurance policy.. which my understanding goes to the other son.. but there are other assets which has no beneficiary..the x wife is not letting my friend be a part in the decision making of what to do with the rest.. all he wants to do is be a part.. my understanding is that they both sould be making decisions as to what happens to things.. she has gone behind his back and has not communicated with him about things.. he wants to hire a lawyer and do things right..bills etc..these things have to be taken care of and he is willing to make sure everything is handled properly.. what are his options.. can she do things with out him.. i know about probate court.. his son was 26 years old.

You say you know about probate court but do not state what has been done in probate. That is your friend's first stop. They will give him a copy of state law.
