To Settle or Not to Settle

I have a friend who is in need of some advice. His ex-wife is making a claim against him over a personal injury from an incident that she intentionally orchestrated which involved attempted theft.
As a result, he was charged but later received an absolute discharge with a peace bond order on the courts reason:
1. He had no prior criminal history or convictions.
2. He had removed himself from his own home for some time due to her unstable, erratic and volatile behaviour.
3. He worked as a professional for a reputable bank.
The judge decided that it was not in the interest of accused and not contrary to public interest.
As a defendant of this case, he was not neglient but his insurance has denied him legal liability coverage on the attempted theft. The ex-wife (plaintiff) is trying to sue him damages over her exaggerated personal injuries.
He has legal counsell who is encouraging him to settle. There is obviously alot more in terms of details but this is a high level overview of this case.
Would anyone be able to provide some constructive or legal advice upon what direction the defendent should pursue? Are there legal professionals who defend clients on a contingency basis?
Thank you
