What do I need to have in place to protect me if I ask my girlfriend to move in?

That's too vague a question but you will likely want to enter into a lease/sublease agreement that is month to month. If you break up, you have a right to terminate the lease with 30 days notice. This is one of the most common problems I see here -- the breakup but neither wants to move. I'm assuming that is what you are asking about.
