is it illegal to set up spy cameras around my house if i suspect my room mate stealing from me?

That can be a tricky situation.
Generally speaking, cameras in common areas are less likely to get you into trouble. Cameras in private areas could cause you some grief.
It may be better to simply get a new roommate and keep your valuables secured.
