In Iowa, what happens if an heir does not survive the settlement of an estate, or part of an estate?

I plan to, but . . .

My Dad's estate includes a 17-year restitution agreement from his financial broker, who stole money.

But generally, I would like to know, if an heir, living at the time of the decedent's death, passes away before an estate is settled, and distributed, what happens to their share?

Is there a length of time, at law, that an heir must survive after the death of the benefactor.

Thanks.

What is the controlling date, if nothing is stated in a Will, that heirs need to survive the decedent by, to qualify for a Distribution, in Iowa, of course?

DOD?
