Due to the gang and drug activity (and recent thefts) in my neighborhood I purchased a security camera system. Do I legally have to post the signs that state I have the cameras? It will defeat the whole purpose in my opinion.

You don't have to post signs but you need to decide the reason for purchasing the security system.

If you want to use the system to discourage things like a break in, then posting signs or putting the cameras in a visible spot would be a good idea. In that case you want the would be thieves to see that you have a security camera system to catch them in the act. This is why folks sometimes purchase "ADT" signs (but not the actual system) or fake cameras that have blinking lights that give the impression they are real.

If you want to use the system to gather evidence on gang and drug activity in your neighborhood, then the focus would be on hiding the cameras.
