Subtenant

I am renting a room in a townhouse type dwelling as 'subtenant'. Is it the responsibility of the 'primary lease holder' to advise the property landlord of my occupying the premises? And if so, May I obtain this information directly from the property landlord?

You might want to find out if the landlord (owner) permits his tenant to sublet before you commit to anything. If the landlord won't allow it, you could be asking for trouble.

As subtenant you do not have any direct responsibility to the landlord. In fact, the tenant is your landlord. If he is not allowed to sublet then he is responsible to his landlord for any damages regarding you or even the cost of evicting you.
