When I was a student in college, my father asked me to sign some documents. I did so in good faith. Turns out, he took out a $5,000 private student loan in my name, of which I have not seen a penny. Now, he is not repaying it, and I am being hounded by a collection agency. Since he is my father, he knows all my personal information -- my social security number, my address, etc, so it's not like he tried to commit fraud by taking advantage of a stranger. Do I have any legal recourse in this instance to get my name off this loan? It's ruining my credit, and I can't afford that! Thanks in advance for any help.

How is it that you as a student had the credit to get a private student loan that you father used?

It sounds like you co-signed a loan. In which case you are screwed. You can't say you signed a bunch of papers without reading them. That is your liability.

If you really want to, sue your Father. Sue him for fraud and use the law to collect from him.
