small business banking

I've been doing a small gardening business since this past spring. I never registered it as a business because it's basically something I do in my spare time. I do, however, charge for my services and have given the business a name. My problem is that occasionally people pay by check written out to the name of the business instead of a personal check to me and I can't deposit it. My question is: Do I need to open a seperate bank account and if so, how do I register my business? The business, by the way, is not turning a profit at this point. I just do it to keep myself busy.

Where are you? Search your state's website for their small business guidelines. You should be able to register your business name even though you're not incorporated, then take the registration to the bank and get an account opened in that name.
