I am on the board of our local kennel club. We have a small membership of less than 40.

It has been brought up at previous meetings that we should become a non-profit corporation as a lot of other clubs currently are. The board is struggling with this as the time, effort and money required to file the initial papers and then the tax paperwork every year after, is probably beyond our means.

We have asked 2 CPA's for their advice. One said not to bother because we simply don't have enough money to matter. The 2nd said "Just file and pay".

At any given time, our club checking account has between $2000 - $6000 in it. We make our money thru our entry fees for our yearly dog shows, from the selling of small ads for our show programs and also from refreshment sales at the shows. We own no property except for the equipment we use at the dog shows. No one gets any salary; we all volunteer our time. We have insurance with national insurance company.

I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone would have.

Thank you,
Luana

Luana - consult with an attorney in your city/town to see what s/he recommends since there is more to it than just a tax status situation here. Good luck to you!
