what happens if I just ignore the letters and don't pay the 400$?
I don't want it going to court but I also can't afford to pay the fee. I'm 15 I have no job. my friend who was caught with me paid his, do you think since he payed his they'll ignore mine? I can't have this on my permanent record, advise me of what I should do

Generally it is best if it is paid. They will not necessarily ignore yours since your friends was paid. Since you are 15, you need to talk to your parents.

I'm really trying to avoid my parents finding out, and paying it :/

I am a Retail theft consultant and answer questions like yours daily. the fastest way for your parents to find out is if you fail to pay. Because your a minor the Civil fine and some of the consequences for not paying go to them. I suggest you read these two posts. Links below.
