Oh, oh, a tourist caught stealing in Germany.
My friend did that, too.
He said it was a mistake, as in an oversight.
If its your first time (getting caught), saying it was a mistake, makes it all just get washed clean.

German law is like Germany, very clean people, very clean country.
They say the Dutch are cleaner, Austrians say they're cleaner.
I don't know who is cleaner.
Do you know who is cleaner?
I think it's a myth.

My grandfather was from Germany.
Came to US with my great-grandparents when he was just 3 years old.
A very clean man, dad says I took after him.
I think I'm clean, kinda. LOL
Sorry, I digress.

German law allows one mistake and they forgive it easier.
If you ADMIT and said you did it by design and on purpose, oh my goodness.
The law will slam you hard.
If you say it was a mistake, well, they forgive you, the way mama forgave you for stealing a purple hot cookies that time. LOL

My friend is from Italy.
He stole about €500 worth of stuff, clothes mostly.
By saying he made a mistake, even though he concealed things inside other packages, well they lectured him, he paid about €50 fine, about 10% of goods' value, then they let him go.


Took him 2 days before it was all over.

If you admitted, better hire a German lawyer.

Check back later. My spouse is sleeping. She is good friends with a German lawyer and though my health precluded my traveling there, her family has been there many times and she likely can advise. In fact we used to make a great team. When someone was trying to steal my uncles estate in Mexico, they tried to give him morphine, so he would not be mentally alert to sign property transfers when the lawyers arrived. A nurse involved in the scam was saying he was in great pain. We just dialed up a doctor from Columbia who read them the riot act in Spanish about doing what we told them to do. When issues of international law were raised, we threatened to call the international lawyer in Germany and things quieted down fast as they realized we had already been flying back and forth from the US, so a few more plane tickets were not out of the question.

Neither wifey or FIL knew. FIL said his impression from being in Germany, is you are in pretty deep trouble.
