Roommate moved out without signing lease

I had a roommate with whom I was sharing an apartment with. We lived together for a year (we both signed the lease together), and decided to renew for a second year. I signed the renewal lease for the new year, but he kept putting it off. Then tensions began to build between us, and he moved out without my knowing or any prior notice for that matter. So I'm stuck paying for his share of the rent for the next six months. I'm still trying to find a roommate, but in the meantime I'm really struggling to make the payments.

Is there any way to get him to still pay the rent? I have proof he was paying me for 18 months before he moved out unexpectedly (from cashed rent checks). Could it be argued that he implicitly is bound to the lease because he was living with me for six months (on the new lease) and signed the lease and lived with me the year before that? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.
