Hi,

I was wondering if the landlord can make me pay to have my carpets professionally cleaned or if I can clean them myself with a machine? The landlord said I have to have proof and hand in the receipt or it will be taken out of my security deposit. Is that leagal?

As far as making you do anything, probably not.
I've come to learn over these many years of my wretched life that people can't make you do anything.
They can, however, mainly make you regret what you didn't do.

Legal or not, its likely the only way you'll get your security deposit returned.
If you don't do as the LL has requested, how do you propose NOT permitting the LL to do as he or she says?
Read your lease, you probably agreed to have them cleaned at your expense when you signed the lease.
Make your life easy, do it the easy way.
