Property Damage Dispute

We rented a movie which had an anti-theft device on it, while watching the movie the device came off inside the dvd/receiver for our surround sound system, resulting in nonrepairable damage. Our system is a discontinued model which they no longer make parts for. We took it to a repair center where they told us that it would have to be replaced. We have gotten the store manager to replace our system with a comparable model, which we appreciate very much. We have not received the new system yet but we were told that we would have to turn over our old broken system to the store. When asked why they want the broken system, we were told that they were going to try to have it fixed. Our question is do they have the right to ask for our old system. They have proof from the repair center stating that the system is nonrepairable and that is needs to be replaced. They said they need to make sure the system is really broken. We think they don't have any right to ask us for the old system. It is our property. In any of our discussions with the store manager, never did she mention that we had to exchange ours for the new system. What are our rights and what should we do?
