Alcohol & Drugs: DUI, DWI Probable cause question

Can someone explain probable cause for DWI to me?

I was pulled over for a tag being out... I was driving the speed limit wasn't weaving in anyway... The cop never said anything about drinking until he pulled my record and saw past DWI's on my record... My question is does he have to have probable cause to suspect drunk driving? I was pulled over for a tag being out and once he saw my record thats when he wanted to start asking questions about if I have had anything to drink?

He had probable cause to pull you over. You can always choose to exercise your right to remain silent.

It sounds like the stop was valid. So long as the stop is legitimate the officer can develop an investigation into further issues as circumstances present.
You have no idea what observations the officer might have made to make him suspect you were intoxicated.
Chances are that he did everything with your consent.
