My brother-in-law bought a car 1 month ago from a private seller. I know that cars are sold as-is since a person cannot know if their engine is going to go out the next day. This case is different though because the owner knowingly covered up a major problem. The head gasket blew 2 days ago and the mechanic said there is clear evidence that a spray "patch" was used to temporary rig the car to keep working. Although my brother-in-law had the car inspected before purchasing it, this was not something visible until the gasket blew again and the mechanic could see the patch-job. I am sure that my brother-in-law has some protection when someone knowingly frauds him - right??
