Possible Copyright Infringement on Animated Series

There is a major cartoon character on TV right now, that looks too much like a character I created in the 90s that right now I'm working with on my personal time. This character I've created has also been copyrighted through copyright.gov in 1999, years prior to the creation of the character on TV. Even the story is similar. I reside in the state of California.

What steps should I take on this matter?
