Here was the situation,
The other night (ny state), about 5 houses down, a guy barricaded himself in his house and he supposedly had guns. Police (about 30) and SWAT team were brought in. They closed the street and would not let anyone down it. MY house was 5 houses down from incident and I was out while the situation started. I came home to this mess and was told I could not go home since street was closed. There was another way around but that was closed also. I was just wondering what the legal authority of the police have in this situation? If I wanted to go home and take my chances wouldn't that be up to me, as long as I am not interfering with their situation. Also what are the legal rules for the police to commandeer a house - they did that to one of my neighbors house. Seems they come in and just do what they like, don't get me wrong I am very thankful for they dedication to protecting citizens, but there must be legal limits. Do I have choices and legal precedent here or do they get to call the shots and I am stuck with what they decide is "good" for me.
Thanks.
