POA for mentally ill brother

I have a brother who has suffered from mental illness for years. He self medicates with alcohol and pills. He is to a point in his disease that he has dementia. Is there any way to get power of attorney over him so that myself or our mother can legally force him to a treatment facility?

You might want you or your Mother to be appointed guardian/conservator of your brother. This would have to be done through the court system.

Heck, I self medicate with alcohol and pills. Many people do. They also suffer from a compromised mental state. Unless 2 doctors are willing to write a letter saying he is incompetent, an application for guardianship will not go far.

OP's brother self medicates for a mental illness & also has dementia (how bad we don't know). It certainly will not hurt for the OP to talk to a doctor or lawyer & see what he/she thinks. Someone who can get complete details.
