Hello all,

I was born as (example) John Smith. Smith was my father's last name.

My mother's last name is Johnson.

Growing up, my last name was different from my mother's last name. My parents never married but I had my father's last name, Smith. And Smith shows on my birth certificate.

I applied for a social security card when I was young, about 20 years ago.

For Social Security, my name became John Smith Johnson. My birth certificate last name was now my MIDDLE Name. And my last name was now Johnson, matching my mother's last name.

Now I have a problem:

My passport name was also changed 15 years ago but it shows:

SMITH JOHNSON as my last name.

Social Security Number/Card shows:

Smith as MIDDLE name. Johnson as LAST name.

I want to get everything the same. Should I change my social security card or passport name? How do I do it?

Thx, :)

John

Infinitely cheaper to get your SS card changed than your passport!

With that said, how did your name legally become Smith Johnson with SS?

Hello.

Regardless of cost, what do you think is easier?

Actuallly, with SS, my legal name is John Smith Johnson

Johnson is my last name.

Smith is my middle name.

Passport shows last name as

Smith Johnson

No middle name on Passport.
