Arrest, Search, Seizure, Warrant Paid Bounced Check Now Have Warrant

I wrote a check over four years ago to WalMart and it didn't clear the bank. I paid the check and have the recipt showing payment. Through a recent background check I discovered that there is a warrant out on this matter. I contacted the Prosecuting Attorney's office to ask and all they would tell me was to go turn myself in. Is there anyway I can avoid having to go to the police? Not sure what to do.
