Only Getting Unemployment...Can They Demand This Too?

My jurisdiction is: New York

I was recently laid off from my job and have just received my first payment from unemployment. I have NO OTHER INCOME at this time. A collection agency has placed a lien on my bank account for a credit card debt, demanding all but $200.00 of what I have left, (which is just $1,400.00 to start with). They also want a monthly payment, of course. This is justified; I do owe. My problems are; (a) I was already paying off a credit card while I was working (both cards were from Providian, but there are two different collection agencies involved), and I don't expect the first one to just go away; they'll be back for their money. And (b) all I have is my unemployment, (less than $250.00 wkly).

So my questions are 1- In New York, can they take my unemployment from
me or demand that I pay them from it?
2- Is it legal (in N.Y.) that I have 2 garnishments on
me at one time?

Thank You in advance for any information you can share with me.

Better question than mine. I would say you have a good argument to be made here. Bigger problem is how to satisfy long term debt - in both the short and long term. Plan this out and try talking with an individual from the company,,,then an attorney
