This is regard to an issue in Nevada.
My father and stepmother divorced in 2006. My stepmother died in 2007. Approximately 6 months after my stepmother's death I received a note from my halfsister that stated that my stepmother's estate had been "settled" and that I would be receiving a check from a financial company. My halfsister also stated that I should "be aware that no taxes have been withheld". I did receive the check (as did my "full" sister).
Our parents' divorce was not a pleasant one and I want to maintain my relationship with my halfsister so I am hesitant to ask her for a copy of the will, however I would like to know how the estate was divided.
I contacted the courthouse and was told there is no record of the will being probated - I realize that can take some time but I have already received the funds so I thought that would mean the will had been probated - I am wondering if my stepmother had a trust of some sort - if so am I entitled to a copy of it?
Also, as my halfsister noted no taxes were withheld, how will I report this money on my tax return?
Thank you.

There are no taxes to you on the inheritance. If the will was not probated it would have to be a trust. If you want to know you will have to ask. If the check came from an attorney you can request the information from them.
