I recently visited a duplex unit that is available to rent. The owner/manager told me that there will no stove and that if I want one, I have to purchase one and may also have to get a range hood (ventilation fan for cooking) along with it. Is there any law that requires the landlord to provide a stove for his tenants?

There is none that I am aware. In fact, some apartments don't have one and you can buy electric burners. If you visit a large city like Manhattan in New York you'll find that some apartments only come with a mini-electric burners since they are too small for a stove!
