I do not own a home, have no assets, cash, savings, 401k. The only thing of value is a car that I paid cash for. I was told that it's not necessary to get a lawyer since the paperwork would be simpler when you have no assets? But I looked online and everything I've found says it's vital to have an atty b/c it's really easy to screw up and you could easily get denied. I have no clue about any of this. Even if it takes more time and effort on my part, if I could do it w/o having to pay a lawyer I would.

Do I need an attorney?

Anyone here do this on their own have any advice for me so I don't screw it up?

All I can tell you is that it costs to go broke.
This sounds idiotic, but it's the simple truth.
Shop around, many lawyers specialize in this.

The reason you want a lawyer is to make sure you get everything
included in the bankruptcy. The can help you to gather all your bills, and a list of debts. Also be aware that you cannot get rid of a student loan in most cases
under bankruptcy laws.
