We bought a car from a used car dealer and the tags were expired. They charged us a smog fee and vehicle registration fees as well as transfer fees. On top of it all they came to our home 2 days later to take the car to have the VIN verified (or so they said) when what they actually did was had a smog check done and had my husband resign paperwork stating that the car was purchased a day after the smog was done. We have the original contract with the correct date. When asked about they lied about it. So my question is can they charge us the smog check and vehicle registration fees?

Yes they can charge you those fees because even though they did it late they still did it. Hopefully it is a decent car and you are otherwise happy with the purchase.
People make mistakes. They discovered theirs and corrected it.
